It will take a very long time for BOINC and the associated projects to recover those lost users. The real world effect is that instead of doing that, people will simply stop using BOINC and go back to some included screensaver that works. Applying the update takes a couple of hours - backing it out and restoring the previous version is fraught with risk and more time consumed. Microsoft's advice is, if an application no longer works after the Creators Update is installed, to back the update out. But expecting Microsoft to fix the problem and issue a new update is not rational or realistic. Millions of cycles will be lost to the BOINC processing collective of projects.
And when the screensaver does not run, people will rapidly stop using it. I understand that they are different, but to laypeople they are effectively the same thing. To me, and to many others, BOINC equals Boinc screensaver equals SETI. If it does not get corrected soon, BOINC, Seti, and many other projects that use BOINC will begin to rapidly loose supporters. If say you set Boinc to start after one minute and the screensaver to start after two minutes, when the screensaver fails it stops Boinc, with "user active".Īs the canary that first reported this problem on April 7, I am surprised and disappointed that it has not gotten any traction and been elevated to the level that I believe it should be. If you set Boinc processing to start when computer is not in use but do not set the screen saver, it starts OK. If you have set Boinc processing to start with the screensaver it does not start. Screen saver preview doesn't work either. After about 1 second, the black screen and minimized windows disappear, and the user is returned to their desktop. If graphics apps are not running: a "BOINC screensaver" minimized window is also shown (see screenshot).

The BOINC screen saver starts to load, the screen correctly goes black, and "BOINC screensaver loading" is correctly shown in the center.
